- Story Text: A group of some 60 gay rights activists gathered for a protest outside the Russian embassy in Buenos AIres on Friday (February 7) as the Winter Olympics opened in Sochi.
The protesters carried rainbow flags and banners against a law the Russian president signed last year banning the spread of "gay propaganda" among minors.
One of the banners carried a slogan calling for Olympic sponsors to take action and carried the fast food restaurant McDonalds logo.
The slogan read: "Olympic sponsors, now is the time to speak out".
There have been protests and criticism from around the world against the "gay propaganda" law.
"The values that the Olympic movement ought to show through the games and through sport, and the values that are set out in the international Olympic charter, we believe the host country does not comply with these principles of the international movement," said protest organiser Carlos Fraquia.
Russian police detained gay rights activists who tried to protest on Moscow's Red Square and in St Petersburg on Friday, shortly before Putin opened the Sochi Winter Olympics, gay rights activists said.
In St Petersburg, the protesters were detained after unfurling a banner declaring "Discrimination is incompatible with the Olympic Movement", gay rights group All Out said.
Putin, who has staked his political and personal reputation on staging a successful Games, has said there will be no discrimination at the Games and the Russian government says the law is needed to protect young people.
Gay rights groups say the new law discriminates against gays and that it has fuelled attacks on homosexuals in Russia, but Putin says it is needed to protect young people. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
