- Story Text: Argentina could hold a 'goal of the tournament' competition all on their own after a series of spectacular efforts brought them a stunning 6-0 win over Serbia & Montenegro on Friday (June 16, 2006).
Carlos Tevez's jinking run and shot for the fifth goal, Javier Saviola's vision and tenaciousness to set up the first and third and Lionel Messi's precocious confidence for the sixth were all worthy of high marks.
But it was the second goal that had fans and neutrals alike standing open mouthed in appreciation. The Argentines, passing and instantly moving to receive, strung together a series of passes, many of them instant one-touch affairs, that left the normally limpet-like Serbian defenders clutching at air.
Saviola suddenly applied the acceleration by drilling the ball low to the edge of the area. Hernan Crespo spun in the air to backheel it into the path of substitute Esteban Cambiasso who ran on to drive it into the roof of the net past Dragoslav Jevric.
The move consisted of 24 passes and had sliced apart a Serbian defence that had conceded only one goal in their entire World Cup qualifying campaign. Argentina fans in Gelsenkirchen were delighted -- but opossition fans not so. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
