- Story Text: Argentines watched with great sadness as their team lost to Germany on Friday (June 30) on penalties in the World Cup quarter-finals.
The crowd stood quietly in downtown Buenos Aires as they stared at the television screen after the match was tied 1-1 at fulltime and after 30 minutes of extra-time.
The Argentines watched intently as goalie Leonardo Franco tried to block the German shots. Argentina was without its first-choice goalkeeper for the shootout with Roberto Abbondanzieri forced off with an injury in the 71st minute.
Argentine faces fell after two saves by German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann in the penalty shootout secured the host nation a place in the semi-finals of the tournament.
"They played very well. They didn't deserve this, at this height, what a shame," said one unidentified fan. "But, well, these things happen. Bad luck, bad luck."
Germany will face either Italy or Ukraine in the semi-finals in Dortmund on Wednesday (AEST). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
