- Story Text: Since they finished as runners-up at the first soccer World Cup final in 1930, Argentina's involvement in international football has been nothing if not passionate. The flair which their team brings has taken them to the final four times, winning it twice.
For the 2006 World Cup in Germany the Argentina squad will be staying at the Herzogspark Hotel in Herzogenrauch in Bavaria, where the kitchen staff are already trying out their latin cooking skills.
Head chef Andreas Bockel said: "They have a different food culture and so we shall have to prepare ourselves for South American tastes. We have to get ready to make a lot of steaks, a lot of fish, it will certainly be a lot different to what we would prepare for the German national team."
Among the meat on offer is -- Argentine steak. It's not on the menu, but advertised on an Argentine football shirt. Cocktails in the hotel bar will also be getting football flavoured names nearer the World Cup. Perhaps they could name one after Diego Maradona, one of the world's greatest and Argentina's most passionate players. His infamous 'Hand of God' goal strengthened the argument of critics who say that the team's determination to win at all costs sometimes sees them go too far. In the 1990 final in Italy for example, where they lost 1-0 to West Germany, they finished the game with just nine men.
Hotel director Wolfgang Leyrer said: "The most important thing for Argentines is playing football, that is their passion. Their second passion is eating and drinking, that is very important for the Argentines. They like to have barbecues in summer when it is warm, good wine and good steaks -- Argentine steaks obviously. And we shall accommodate this and advertise it."
As long as Argentina makes the finals, the World Cup will never be short of passion. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
