- Story Text: Paraguayan nationals living in Buenos Aires, Argentina reacted sadly on Saturday (June 10) to their team's 1-0 loss to England, thanks to an own goal by their captain.
Paraguayan skipper Carlos Gamarra deflected a David Beckham free-kick past his own goalkeeper Justo Villar after only three minutes, but although England dominated the rest of the first half they failed to score again.
Paraguay took the game to England in the second half but failed to seriously test England goalkeeper Paul Robinson.
"It couldn't happen today but we will recover. I think we will win the next one and I am sure that we will classify for the next round," Paraguayan soccer fan Hugo Candia said after watching the match in a restaurant in Buenos Aires.
England were largely content to soak up Paraguay's pressure for long periods, and their only real goal attempts in the second half came from two Frank Lampard shots.
England, who had lost two and drawn one of the opening games in their last three tournaments, will be satisfied though with a winning start in a physical encounter.
The first attack produced a goal when Beckham's ball soared into the danger zone and Gamarra sent a glancing header past his own keeper Justo Villar under pressure from Michael Owen and John Terry.
Things got worse for Paraguay four minutes later when an injured Villar was replaced by 20-year-old reserve Aldo Bobadilla, the fastest keeper substitution in World Cup history.
There was more bad news for Paraguay when Sweden drew with Trinidad and Tobago in their Group B match to send Paraguay to the bottom of the group with no points. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
