- Story Text: Argentina's Red Rock III took individual line honour in the first Inshore Race of the Admiral's Cup series at Cowes, Isle of Wight, U.K., on Monday (4 August) ... after a tightly contested race.
But the real triumph of the day went to the British team, who -- with Yeoman, Noryma and battle cry all finishing in the first seven places -- went to third place in the team placing, two places behind West Germany who moved ahead to the top of the points table.
The United States fell back to second place after the race, the second of the Admiral's Cup four, and Australia sank to fourth position ... with the possibility of dropping further, depending on the results of a protest against the yacht Mercedes, who jumped the starting gun, along with three others.
Facing freshening winds and a heat haze brought on by the day's high temperatures, the Australian yacht Bumblebee -- winner of the Cross Channel Race on Friday (1 August) -- took an early lead. But heavy mist made spotting the Nab Tower marker difficult, and it was the Spanish contender Sanumac that rounded first
For the second half of the 70 mile (48 kilometre) race, yachts jostled for placing, often reaching speeds of over 20 knots. But it was Red Rock who came past the line first, leaving quite a few disappointed Australian and U.S. yachtsmen in her wake.
