- Story Text: About 30 people have taken part in a solidarity protest
in front of the Argentine embassy in Berlin.
Banging on pots and pans, about thirty protesters
gathered in front of the Argentine embassy in Berlin on
Wednesday (January 23) to show their support for Argentina,
struck by the worst economic crisis in decades.
The rally was organised by the German Research and
Documentation Centre Chile-Latin America.
International Monetary Fund managing director Horst
Koehler was quoted on Wednesday as saying the IMF was ready to
offer Argentina financial aid once it has a credible plan for
repairing its battered economy. "We decided last week to give
Argentina an extra year to make a $900 million payment that
was due," Koehler told newspaper Die Zeit in an interview to
be published on Thursday.
The IMF cut off aid to Argentina in December as the
country's political and financial crisis deepened. It has been
blamed by many, including former World Bank chief economist
Joseph Stiglitz, for helping to contribute to the crisis by,
in the past, supporting Argentina's now defunct peso-dollar
peg.
