- Story Text: Argentina's beef industry, already facing financial troubles because of Government taxes, has been dealt another blow by the European Economic Community. The country exports 70 percent of its beef to the community countries. But last week the Council of Ministers decided to ban imports until November.
Argentina has protested sharply over the ban. Other South American meat exporters are expected to follow their action. The Argentine note accused the EEG Council of Ministers of violating the EEC-Argentina trade agreement by deciding on the import ban without prior consultation.
The meat producers of Argentina say France is behind the ban. It's estimated that 50-thousand tons of the 133-thousand tons of beef now being held in the Common Market countries is in could storage in France. A prelude to the EEC ban was the actin taken by dock-workers in Le Havre who threw Argentina beef they were unloading into the harbour.
There was a great deal of muttering at the recent beef judging held in Palermo Argentina on Saturday (July 27). Producers were vocal in condemning the EEC ban and will back the government all the way in their protest to the Council of Ministers.
