- Story Text: Hundreds of unemployed Argentines have marched through
Buenos Aires, expressing their support for Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez and their opposition to the war in Iraq.
They have also demanded improvements in their unemployment
benefits.
Hundreds of unemployed Argentines marched through the
streets of Buenos Aires on Thursday (January 23) saying that
they are willing to travel to Venezuela to support President
Hugo Chavez.
"We are available to arm the international brigades to
fight through the media and stand next to the workers and the
Venezuelan people, but not one person is going to die as a
result of the pro-Yankee and fascist coup in Venezuela, nor in
any area of Latin America," said protest leader Raul Castels.
An embassy official received a group of the protesters,
who handed over a letter in support of the Latin American
country.
Venezuela has been paralysed since December by a national
opposition strike intended to force Chavez to resign.
The Argentine protesters also marched to the United States
embassy, calling for peace and expressing their outrage over
an imminent war against Iraq.
"We are rejecting Yankee imperialism so that they take
their hands out of Latin America and in order to stop the
genocide from a war against Iraq," said protest leader Nestor
Pitrola.
The workeers also marched to the Ministry of Labour
demanding improvements in unemployment benefits.
