- Story Text: Argentine doctor says the transfer of ailing soccer
star Diego Maradona to a rehabilitation clinic, could be
the last opportunity to overcome his health difficulties.
Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona was taken to
the Del Parque clinic in Castelar, on the outskirts of
Buenos Aires on Sunday (May 9) where local media reports
said he would stay for drug rehabilitation.
On Monday (May 10) Alfredo Cahe, Maradona's personal
physician, met with the media and shed light on the
difficulties of moving the soccer legend to the clinic.
"We have been alone, we have been alone. They criticize
the colleagues, and the specialist clinics - they didn't
take us in anywhere," Cahe said. "They rejected us in an
incredible manner and a time came when we didn't know what
to do."
The clinic, situated in a wooded region, was heavily
guarded by police and private security. Only hours after
his arrival, small groups of onlookers and fans gathered
nearby, some hanging "Get Well" messages on a gate.
"Diego is the greatest there is," said Cristian Romano,
a fan. "We came to give him encouragement because we all
love him, as a player and as a person. He's the greatest. "
Since 2000, 43 year old Maradona has been living at a
spa in Cuba where he has been undergoing a drugs
rehabilitation programme.
The 1986 World Cup winner returned to Argentina in
March and spent his time playing golf, visiting his teenage
daughters and appearing on TV chat shows before being
rushed to hospital on April 18 with a swollen heart and breathing
problems.
He spent 12 days in intensive care, including one week
on an artificial respirator, before suddenly discharging
himself.
Maradona then surprised the nation by playing golf at a
plush country getaway the day he left hospital for the
first time.
He was reportedly paid $80,000 for a television
interview two days later in which he said he "was dying"
but that his fans had called him back from the tunnel of
death.
Last Wednesday, (May 5) he went back into hospital for
what his personal doctor Alfredo Cahe said was a check-up.
