- Story Text: Team of humanitarian aid workers leave
for Haiti with several tonnes of food and medicine.
A team from one of Argentina's leading humanitarian
aid organizations left Buenos Aires on Saturday (March 6)
for Haiti.
Seven members, including a doctor who speaks Creole, of
the White Helmets Commission departed on a Hercules C-130
military plane. The cargo included 650 kilos of medicine,
100 pills to purify one million litres of water, 500 kilos
of oil, four tonnes of rice, and two and a half tonnes of
corn.
"Volunteers from the White Helmets are going to stay in
Haiti, along with humanitarian aid organisations in order
to prepare a future deployment of civil volunteers who will
develop the humanitarian aid work until the situation
stabilises more than it is now," explained the President of
the White Helmets, Gabriel Fuks.
Chaos in Haiti leading up to the rebel ouster of
President Jean-Bertrand Aristide on Sunday (February 29)
stalled the distribution of vital food supplies and medical
services, according to the International Committee of the
Red Cross.
Medical personnel, hospitals and ambulances have been
targeted during the bloody uprising, Red Cross officials
said.
The Argentine government said recently that it will
also consider sending troops to join the multinational
force. Officials will make a decision within the next
ninety days, Defense Minister Jose Pampuro said.
Chile recently sent 120 troops to Haiti to join U.S.,
Canadian and French soldiers in restoring order to the
crisis-wracked country.
