- Story Text: Argentina beat Bolivia 1-0 in La Paz on Sunday (September 23rd) to take a commanding lead in the battle in Latin America for places in the 1974 World Soccer cup Finals. Argentina now heads South American Group Two - which also includes Paraguay as Bolivia - with five points. They retain a valuable goal average lead over Paraguay.
The Argentine team had difficulty in the opening minutes of the game, acclimatising to the high altitude at the National Stadium. The Bolivians charged into the attack, cheered on by the home crowd. But they could not penetrate Argentina's defence line, led by full back Angel Hugo Vargas, who plays for the French team Nantes. After 10 minutes, the Argentines swept the game out of their hands and moved in for the goal. After several dangerous shots, righting Oscar Fornari headed the ball into the net in the 18th minute.
