- Story Text: On Thursday (June 28), the secretary-general of the MERCOSUR trading bloc, Samuel Pinheiro Guimaraes, resigned in Mendoza, Argentina.
Citing a lack of support for his projects and policies, the Brazilian's resignation came as a surprise to his fellow members.
"Well, it surprised the foreign ministers at the meeting and, surely, there will be talks between the Brazilian foreign minister, the Argentine, the Uruguayan and Samuel Pinheiro Guimaraes regarding what can stay in his charge. He-- Samuel Pinheiro Dimaraes-- is a very important person for an organization like Mercosur to lose him. Hopefully, we can keep him," said Uruguayan Senator Alberto Couriel.
MERCOSUR is a regional trading bloc that includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.
Earlier in the day, a Paraguayan official complained that his delegation was denied entrance to the meeting.
Several of the MERCOSUR nations have raised concern over democracy in Paraguay after the swift impeachment of former President Fernando Lugo. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
