- Story Text: Top seed Guillermo Vilas of Argentina won the Argentine Open Tennis Championships for the fifth successive year when he beat Chile's Jaime Fillol in four sets in Buenos Aires on Monday (28 November). Vilas, a brilliant winner of this year's United States Open, won 6-2, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
SYNOPSIS: The long-haired Argentinean, serving at the far end, has a magnificent record playing on clay. He dropped this point, but made few other unforced errors.
Vilas served again, this time for the first set... Fillol put it out and the Argentinean was on his way to yet another title.
Fillol took only two games in the opening set, but in the second he put Vilas under pressure. His drives were more confident, and this time Vilas was beautifully wrong-footed.
At one stage Vilas was trailing 4-0 in the second set, but Fillol let him off the hook. Vilas, conqueror of Chile's Hans Gildemeister in the semi-finals, fought back magnificently, and levelled at 5-5. Fillol then dropped his serve, and this netted shot gave Vilas the set 7-5.
Fillol rallied superbly to take the third set 6-3, but in the fourth, Vilas, a comfortable leader in the international grand prix table, got back on top. Fillol tried hard to upset his rhythm, but was again passed at the net.
By this stage Vilas was playing with tremendous confidence. His serves were deep and accurate, and whenever Fillol came to the net he was invariably passed. The Chilean battled gallantly to square the match, but with the score at 5-3 another fine lob gave Vilas the title.
