- Story Text: On the fourth anniversary of the death of Argentina's former Dictator, President Juan Peron, (Saturday (1 July) a huge crowd gathered by his tomb to pay their respects.
SYNOPSIS: An estimated five thousand people gathered beside the tomb at Chacarita, a suburb of Buenos Aires. It was the first time since the military government of Jorge Videla took office that so many people have been allowed to demonstrate openly at person's tomb. The Videla regime has previously taken a strict line over all demonstrations and open air meetings. But the World Cup Soccer matches, played recently in Argentina and won by the home side, has left everyone more relaxed.
General Peron had been President of Argentina from 1946 to 1955. Ousted from office, and in exile in Spain for eighteen years, he retained a considerable influence over his country's affairs. He returned as President in 1973 but died less than a year later. His widow Isabel assumed the Presidential mantle. The demonstrators called for freedom for Isabel Peron. She was arrested and jailed after being overthrown two years ago by General Videla.
The recently retired commander of the fifth army bridge in Tucuman, General Acdel Vilas, was among those who gathered later for a mass in memory of President Peron. Other well known figured were also there, including a former minister Angel Robledo. When the demonstrators tried to move toward the Presidential Palace, police blocked their way with armoured cars, teargas, and machine guns.
