Daniel Scioli, the South American and European champion, won the first stage of the International Offshore Powerboating Competition, setting a new record of 149.52 kilometres an hour over the 278 km course between Buenos Aires and San Nicolas. The stage was the longest of five races which make up the overall event (1150 km).
Driving his Frigidaire Turbo De Alba, Sciola and co-driver Luca Nicolini had an advantage of 3 mins 40 seconds over second-placed Jore and Roberto Kern, in Mr John L. Cook, their boat. In favourable weather conditions, competitors had to avoid a number of sand banks on the course, made even more hazardous by the low level of the water.
