- Story Text: Brazilians said they were happy about Argentina's win over Belgium on Saturday (July 5) as it brought the two South American rivals a step closer to a historic meeting in the World Cup final.
A crowd of hundreds of Argentina and Brazil fans gathered just outside Brasilia's National Stadium after Argentina's 1-0 quarter-final win, chanting and taunting one another and singing songs.
One Brazil fan held a coffin painted in the Argentine national colours and both sides waved their national flags in each others' faces.
Dozens of police with batons formed lines around them to ensure things didn't get out of hand, but the mood was on the whole more jovial than aggressive.
"Brazil has been very good. Brazil and Argentina's past has been very good. We're going to meet at the final, the final at Maracana is going to be the amazing. Is the final against Argentina at Maracana going to be good?" Brazilian fan Rodrigo Oliviera asked his friend named Claudio.
"Brazil, Brazil, Brazil. Brazil two, Argentina one," said Claudio, showing the numbers with his fingers.
"We're already both going to Maracana to watch the final," Oliviera added.
Braziliian Jorje Lima was also hoping for a showdown in the final.
"We're happy because of the World Cup in Brazil. I think Argentina are also happy because they won today against Belgium. We're going to meet at the final, which is great," he said.
Many Argentinean fans are already making comparisons with 'Maracanazo,' when Uruguay beat Brazil in the 1950 World Cup final in Rio's Maracana stadium, one of the Brazilian team's darkest hours.
"That is what everyone is expecting: another Maracanazo. Let's hope it will happen. It will be spectacular for football. An Argentina-Brazil final would be excellent," said Diego Fernanez from Buenos Aires.
"It would be the best final possible. It would be crazy for both countries. It would be nerve-wracking, but yes, that's what we want: a final against Brazil," his friend Martin Ferrari added.
An estimated 50,000 Argentines were expected to descend on Brasilia for Saturday's game.
Authorities boosted security, with an army of police guarding the stadium, but the match passed without major incident. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
