- Story Text: Argentina fans were celebrating a place in the World Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday (July 1) as Alejandro Sabella's team beat Switzerland 1-0 after extra time.
Angel Di Maria scored two minutes from the end of the additional 30 minutes, as Argentina to give Argentina scored a late winning goal for the second time during the tournament.
"It was a difficult match, a match that took us a lot to get the goal and we came close many more times than them, they had very few opportunities, and Argentina is the best. Argentina."
The Swiss more than held their own in the first half of normal time as Granit Xhaka's shot was saved by Sergio Romero and Josip Drmic fluffed an attempted chip when clean through but Argentina gradually took command only for Switzerland's Diego Benaglio to save well from Gonzalo Higuain and Lionel Messi.
"I have enjoyed the game, it was very near together but finally I think Messi made the difference; a very good pass to Di Maria and the shot was too sharp, too sharp," said Switzerland fan Mario Young. "The goalkeeper (Diego) Benaglio played very well today but the shot was too hard for him."
Neither team mustered much in the way of an attack in a flat extra period but, just as penalties loomed, the Swiss lost possession allowing Messi to run at their defence before slipping the ball into the path of Di Maria who swept home.
There was still time for Switzerland's Blerim Dzemaili to head against a post but Argentina survived and will play either Belgium or the United States in the quarter-finals on Saturday (July 5).
There was a large contingent of Brazil fans in the crowd hoping Switzerland would beat their arch-rivals Argentina but it wasn't meant to be.
"We are going to beat Argentina in the final, because I'm Brazilian you know, and the World Cup is ours. Brazil, Brazil," said Brazilian fan Adriana Bendito, who was supporting Switzerland at the Corinthians arena. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
