- Story Text: On the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, D.C., U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Argentine Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana signed a port security agreement on Tuesday (April 13), with U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu standing closeby.
"Argentina is on the forefront of nuclear security and, with this signing, it will make yet another contribution to our common efforts to enhance the safety of our peoples and, indeed, of all people. It is a symbol, not only of our shared commitment to the issue of nuclear security but also of our long, bilateral partnership," Clinton said, as U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu stood closeby.
The Megaport Initiative Agreement provides "radiation detection equipment, training, and technical support to key international seaports to scan cargo containers for nuclear and other radioactive materials," according to a press release from the U.S. State Department.
Clinton said the signing of agreement between the U.S. and Argentina allows for the installation of radiation detection equipment at the Port of Buenos Aires. The U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) will work with Argentine Customs, according to the press release.
"This is a very practical cooperation agreement. We are to receive equipment that will be operated by Argentines there to avoid the possibility of illegal traffic of nuclear materials and radioactive materials," Taiana said.
Clinton said the agreement currently extends to 30 ports globally.
The goal is to equip 100 ports with radiation and detection equipment and provide port personnel with training and technical support, Clinton said. - Copyright Holder: POOL (CAN SELL)
