- Story Text: The self-appointed separatist mayor of the eastern Ukrainian town of Slaviansk said on Thursday (April 24) he is bracing for an attack by Ukrainian forces overnight.
"Tonight we expect storming of administrative buildings which are under our control, storming of our city," Ponomaryov said at a news conference in Slaviansk, where pro-Russian separatists continued to occupy a local administration building.
"The situation is being followed by everyone and is under control. Everyone understands perfectly what's going on here. I hope the help will come, no doubt," Ponomaryov added.
Ukrainian Interior Ministry and Defence Ministry forces were in action against pro-Russian separatist rebels near the eastern city of Slaviansk on Thursday and said they killed "up to five".
Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has promised to protect Russian-speakers in Ukraine, said earlier in the day that there would be consequences if the authorities in Kiev used the army against their own people. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
