- Story Text: Retro buses have taken a ride through the centre of the Russian capital on Saturday (August 9) in a dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the first bus route in Moscow.
Fifteen vehicles from the Moscow Transport Museum took part in the parade. The oldest bus driving through the Moscow streets - the last remaining of its kind - was made in 1936.
Apart from the museum exhibits, the public was presented with some new developments in public transport. The bus column started from the Leningradsky Avenue, following Moscow's first bus route, and drove down Tverskaya street towards the Kremlin. The race finished at Academician Sakharov Avenue, where the buses were put on display.
Vintage buses received a warm welcome from the public.
"We were driving in the first bus. It's a legendary ZIS-8. Moscow citizens were standing on the streets, greeting us, shouting and clapping. And the atmosphere was very positive," Tatiana, one of the event's organisers.
During the exhibition people had a chance to get on buses, to sit inside and even behind the wheel. Some visitors said the event brought back the memories of their youth.
"They (buses) were always bright. That's what I remember from my childhood, it was always bright inside," Mikhail, Moscow citizen, said.
The first regular bus route in Moscow was opened in 1924, and it linked today's Komsomolskaya square with Belorusskiy train station. The route was about 8,5 km long.
Today, there are 668 bus routes in the Russian capital which cover 7 000 km of roads. The longest one is 73,1 km long. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
