- Story Text: Kiev residents marched through the streets of the Ukrainian capital on Saturday (September 20), wearing traditional embroidered shirts and bands of flowers in their hair to show support for the government's troops involved in months of conflict with pro-Russian separatists in the country's east.
The march processed peacefully, bearing a definite patriotic spirit.
Marchers were outfitted in traditional Ukrainian "vyshyvanka" shirts, with colourful embroidery in regional folk patterns and floral garlands on their heads.
They held Ukrainian flags and flags of Ukrainian military department units.
As the ralliers walked through the main squares of Kiev towards the Dnipro river, some shouted "Glory to Ukraine!", which answered by "Glory to Heroes" by the crowd.
According to the organisers of the event, the march was meant as a sign of support for the Ukrainian servicemen.
On the river bank where the march finished, people could buy pictures by Ukrainian painters holding special auctions to raise money for the Ukrainian soldiers.
Fighting between Ukrainian troops and separatists is halted for now, after rebels and Kiev authorities agreed on a ceasefire on Sept. 5 and creating a buffer zone on between the two sides' frontlines on Sept. 19 in Minsk.
The conflict in the east of Ukraine has already claimed more than 3,000 lives.
