- Story Text: Paraguay's Horacio Cartes met with his Ecuadorian counterpart, Rafael Correa in Quito on Friday (November 21) as part of an official visit to the South American country.
Cartes, who arrived in Ecuador on Thursday (November 20), held meetings with Correa at the Carondelet Palace where the heads of states discussed strengthening ties they hailed as "brotherly," especially in areas of trade, security and education.
"Paraguay knows it can count on Ecuador. Our Paraguayan brothers know they have their Ecuadorian brothers, and you all should feel at home because Ecuador is (part of) the larger (Latin American) country. It is your country; it is the country of all Latin American men and women. Welcome to you all, and thank you for visiting," Correa said while welcoming Cartes and the Paraguayan delegation.
Cartes, a 58-year-old businessman who assumed the presidency of the landlocked country in 2013, said Paraguay was working to catch up to its South American neighbours including Ecuador in matters of crime control. .
"The electronic government, the government of control, of security, and so much more that you have already taken the steps towards here… We are taking… Ecuador is walking; Paraguay is crawling and we want to see the country that we were looking at to assimilate to what we believe in. It truly is here, in Ecuador," Cartes said.
As part of an initiative to modernize Ecuador's crime response, the country has installed 2,400 cameras across the country to keep a closer eye on major streets, walkways and parks.
Cartes was scheduled to return to Paraguay later on Friday.
