- Story Text: The first Tournament of Roses parade of the new
millennium attracted up to half a million people by some
estimates, with a worldwide television audience of more than
300 million. The parade, held outside Los Angeles, is known
for its elaborate floats decorated with millions of flowers.
Rain overnight did not dampen the spirits of the
thousands who camped out on New Year's eve along the route of
the 111th Tournament of Roses Parade.
The New Year's Day parade is usually bathed in sunlight and
warm temperatures. The sun was elusive on Sunday (January 1),
but temperatures were expected to climb into the 70s
(Fahrenheit).
This year's theme was "Celebration 2000: Visions of the
Future."
The annual parade, with its flower-festooned floats and
brassy marching bands, is a southern California tradition
originally begun to showcase the region's mild climate. What
originally started in the late 19th century with
flower-covered carriages has bloomed into one of the country's
best-known events.
The elaborate floats are professionally-built and some take
almost a year to construct.
Every inch of the float must be covered with flowers or
other natural materials. Many floats rely on computerized
robotics to add a bit of excitement.
The parade is the prelude to the Rose Bowl Game, a football
game matching the best teams in the Big 10 and the Pacific 10
conferences.
This year, Stanford University, whose marching band is
known for its antics, plays the University of Wisconsin. And
no Tournament of Roses parade would be complete without beauty
queens - in this case the finalists from the nearly 700 young
women vying for the honor of riding on the Rose Queen float.
The Rose Queen and her six Rose Princesses, chosen for
their scholastic achievement, poise, personality and public
speaking ability, make public appearances throughout the year
representing the tournament.
