- Story Text: As many as 15 rebels have been shot dead in Indonesia's
troubled Aceh province in a battle between police and separatists.
The clash occured on Saturday (June 19) as an elite
police unit patrolled near Matang Sejuk village, 80 km east of
Lhokseumawe.
Officials confirmed three rebels were killed in the
incident, but reports said up to 15 separatists had been
killed in the fighting.
There were no police fatalities, but one officer
sustained injuries to his right leg, officials added.
The area is a stronghold of the pro-independence Free Aceh Movement.
The police said security officers, which included
marine, troops and policemen, confiscated spears, two
motorcycles, rifles, bullets, Indonesian bank notes and
separatist flags from the rebels.
A separatist insurgency has been simmering in the
staunchly Moslem province on the northern tip of Sumatra for decades.
Violence has increased in the past month, with several
people killed and more than 10,000 fleeing their homes.
Indonesian troops have been accused of widespread human rights
abuses in their efforts to quell the rebellion.
Jakarta is relying increasingly on more-disciplined
police units instead of soldiers to deal with the unrest.
