- Story Text: Zambia celebrates 10 years of independence on 24 October.
With barely ten days to go, Zambians have been busy putting the finishing touches to the decorations that have gone in Lusaka, the capital, and other cities.
The Zambian flags have been hoisted on buildings and along roads and streets. Banners carry political slogans hailing the ruling United National Independent Party (UNIP).
The highlight of this year's celebrations will be an agricultural and industrial show in Lusaka, which promises to be a showcase of Zambia's achievements in the last decade.
The exhibition organisers said they had received a record number of 220 entries. The exhibitors will display Zambia's achievements in the fields of manufacturing, agriculture and commerce.
Zambian's President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, will open the show on the eve of the Independence Day. The ceremony will be attended by many foreign Heads of State.
SYNOPSIS: Despite some problems in creating a totally self-reliant economy - Zambia is trying to break away from a massive white ruled industrial complex of South Africa and Rhodesia. The country has made considerable progress in improving the life of its people, and is striving to make further improvements.
