  • Story Text: Latest pictures from Stalinist North Korea
    show no visible signs of preparations for the country's
    historic summit with rival South Korea.

    North Korean school children gathered at the foot of
    Kim Il-sung's monument in downtown Pyongyang on Tuesday (June 6).

    Wearing red scarves around their necks, the children, who
    are celebrating North Korea's Agriculture Day, offered flowers
    and paid their respect to their country's leader.

    Although North Korea is gearing up to host a historic
    summit with rival South Korea, there were hardly any visible
    signs of preparation.

    Instead, people were seen celebrating Tuesday's holiday by
    gathering for a picnic at a park next to a river.

    Most of Pyongyang's streets were empty except for some
    women selling herbal drinks to few customers and children
    playing around public telephone booths.

    But at the Demilitarised Zone, which divides the North
    from the South, North Korean soldiers continue to be on high
    alert.

    Across the border, United States (U.S.) soldiers carefully
    watch their North Korean counterparts.

    North Korea on Saturday (June 10) repeated its demand that
    the United States withdraw its 37,000 troops from South Korea.

    A visiting tour group was allowed inside the North Korean
    side of the DMZ where among the tourist attractions, is a
    monument bearing Kim Il-sung's last signature and the room
    where the Armistice Agreement was signed in 1953.

    This agreement has left the two Koreas armed to the teeth
    on the divided peninsula and facing each other across the Cold
    War's last frontier.

    The summit, now set to begin on Tuesday (June 13), will be
    the first between leaders of the two Koreas and takes place
    two weeks before ceremonies in the South marking the 50th
    anniversary of the outbreak of the 1950-53 Korean War.
