More than 200 Moslem separatists surrendered to authorities in Thailand's southern province on October 14, a move hailed by officials as a prelude to peace in the strife-torn region. The southern province has been a central area of activity for anti-government groups and Moslem separatists. The government has become so worried about the level of rebel activity in the south, that it has instituted a "strategic hamlet" project, aimed at developing a network of loyal villages, in this strategically vital province. Pattani is the heart of the Moslem community in Thailand and it was here that the formal surrender ceremony was held, with the Moslem separatists swearing an oath of allegiance to the Thai Government. After the ceremony, thousands of villagers, including the separatists, marched to the Provincial Administration Office in Pattani. Here they were addressed by the Supreme Armed Forces Commander General Arthit kamlang-ek, who called upon the people of the southern province, not to be misled by anti-government propaganda. He said the government, under Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda, had been trying to restore law and order in the south.
