The Sultan of Oman, Qaboos Bin Said Al Said led the traditional Sovereign's Parade at the British Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, on April 8. Sandhurst's first passing out parade was taken by the late English King, George the Sixth on July 14, 1948. King George then decreed that the passing out ceremony should be known as the Sovereign's parade. The Royal Military Academy was founded in 1741 to train officer cadets and was combined with the Royal Military College in 1947. Since then over 18,000 officers have been trained, including cadets from 63 different countries. As representative of the present Queen of England the Sultan presented two major awards at this the 81st parade. A parade cane, the traditional Overseas Award, was given to Cadet Corporal James Mathenge Ikinya from Kenya, the most outstanding foreign student. Junior Under Officer Christopher Claridge, considered the top cadet in the Fusileers was awarded the Sword of Honour. Oman's Sultan then watched the final march past, a familiar sight, for he was himself a cadet of Sandhurst.
