- Story Text: Final preparations for Wednesday's (October 27) parliamentary elections were taking place throughout Egypt this week. By Tuesday (October 26) ballot boxes were being distributed under police and government supervision, and an army of clerks was preparing the massive amount of paperwork involved in registering the votes of eight million electors. The election, to fill 338 seats in the new Parliament, the People's Assembly, is part of a reform programme by President Sadat -- which he began in May following the discovery of a plot to overthrow the Government.
SYNOPSIS: The Egyptian Parliamentary elections....and final preparations in Cairo on Tuesday for the next day's ballot among eight million voters. The election was ordered by President Anwar Sadat in a reform programme following the discovery last May of a plot to overthrow the Government by force.
Strict police and government security controlled the last-minute preparations, involving a massive amount of paperwork to record the votes for the remaining three hundred and thirty eight seats. Twelve seats had already been chosen for representatives of the military areas along the Suez Canal. A further ten members of Parliament -- the People's Assembly -- were to be chosen directly by President Sadat.
The new Assembly will be inaugurated on November the eleventh. Other Presidential reforms following the plot discovery have included an overhaul of the country's legislative machinery. It has been de-centralised into 25 regions, so that no single group can take control of it.
