- Story Text: South Africa's Defence Minister, Mr. Pieter Botha, said on Saturday (27 November) that no embargo world succeed in keeping South Africa from producing the necessary equipment to protect its soldiers.
SYNOPSIS: Mr. Botha was speaking at a ceremony in Pretoria where he presented awards and medals for bravery to members of the country's armed forces. Altogether 35 members of the army and air force received bravery medals at the parade, three of them posthumously. Many were presented for acts of bravery during the South African campaign in Angola.
The chiefs of the army, air force and navy, Lieutenant General J. Viljoen, Lieutenant General Rogers and Admiral J. Johnson also attended the ceremony, which included a display by the Air Force's Silver Falcon squadron.
Second Lieutenant David weasels, from the Army Engineering Corps, received the Honoris Crux Gold Medal, the highest bravery medal awarded in South Africa from Mr. Botha. He was decorated for dragging a wounded soldier to safety while under fire.
A posthumous Honoris Crux silver medal was awarded to Sergeant Frederick Wannenburg from the Infantry Corps. His sister received the award in his place at Saturday's ceremony. Another posthumous medal went to the wife of Captain Johan Wolfgang Holm of the Infantry Corps. He was killed while trying to assist a South African armoured car trapped in an ambush.
Another posthumous medal went to Second Lieutenant Kevin Winter bottom of the South African Air Force. Later Mr. Botha spoke of South Africa's determination to defend its borders.
