We don't call it an agreement, we call it just a joint understanding. Not a memorandum of understanding, basically this is a joint understanding for humanitarian pause. It comprises two basic elements. One is the effective delivery of humanitarian assistance for the people of Aceh and second there are the security modalities to support the humanitarian assistance with the purpose of reducing tensions and cease violence." 1.55 5. I will say it again it is not a ceasefire agreement. Basically, what we will limit is the offensive military actions. There is no question of troop withdrawal. The troops are there and around (Aceh), they can be in and out but as long as the movement is considered as peaceful there is no limitations. The police will continue with their normal police functions to maintain public order. The ceasefire is an exercise of restraint on both sides." 3.01 7. CA JOURNALISTS AND INDONESIAN DELEGATES 3.05 8. - Story Text: Indonesia and separatist Aceh rebels have signed an
agreement aimed at ending over two decades of violence in the
northwestern province.
Hassan Wirajuda, Indonesia's ambassador to the United
Nations in Geneva, said on Friday (May 12) that there was no
question of troop withdrawal from the province.
Wirajuda said that the agreement was aimed at preventing
further bloodshed.
The truce, signed under a news blackout at a secret
location in Geneva, would come into effect on June 2 and be
regularly reviewed. But it is far from clear whether it will
hold.
While both sides welcomed the deal as a key step towards
peace, the rebels vowed to continue their push for
independence and Jakarta ruled out recognition for the
separatists.
