- Story Text: Representatives from African nations began a three-day conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Monday (13 May) to prepare for the World Population Conference in Rumania in August. the representatives are from ember nations of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). Decisions reached at the preparatory conference will be presented at the Rumanian conference which opens in Bucharest on August the 19th.
The opening session was addressed by Doctor Robert Gardiner, the executive secretary of the ECA who said the population of the African region was estimated at 400-million and was growing at the rate of two-point-nine percent each year. He said the rate was expected to increase to three-point-one per cent by the year two-thousand when the total population was expected to be 818 million. Doctor Gardiner said that high fertility and declining mortality prevailed in all but a few African nations, and it was time to formulate population controls.
Among the nations attending the conference are Zambia, Zaire, Senegal and Sierra Leone.
