- Story Text: In the Philippines, last minute preparations for the World Chess Championship are under way in Baguio City, were the games will be played. The atmosphere in the mountain resort is tense following a claim by the Soviet defector, Viktor Korchnoi, that he would be killed by KGB agents if he beat the current Soviet world champion, Anatoly Karpov. The challenger has sought the names and the functions of the delegation accompanying Karpov. But the Soviet Union refused on Friday (7 July) to give any details, claiming that the arrival and length of stay of the Soviet delegation were not limited by match regulations.
SYNOPSIS: Although the city is awash with banners welcoming the players, the games ahead could be bitter. Korchnoi has portrayed himself as a lone exile seeking justice against what he calls a powerful machine. Hardly surprisingly, both men are staying at different hotels. Even separate welcoming ceremonies were arranged with the Mayor of Baguio City. First, Korchnoi received the city's traditional welcome key -- and then it was Karpov's turn.
The city's new Convention Centre, where the world championship will by played, is the scene of feverish activity. On Thursday (6 July), Korchnoi and the leader of his delegation, Mrs. Petra Leeuwerick of the Swiss Chess Federation, spent time inspecting the facilities. Part of Korchnoi's equipment consists of a secret ray detector to determine if radio activity or secret rays are being used to muddle his thinking. The world title goes to the first player to win six games.
