- Story Text: The likes of Oscar nominees Carey Mulligan and Helen Mirren were among the stars who dined in Beverly Hills on Saturday night (March 06, 2010) at an elegant pre-Oscar gathering.
The studio, Sony Pictures Classics hosted the event, held at the Il Cielo restaurant on the eve prior to the 82nd annual Academy Awards. Actress Carey Mulligan, who's nominated for her role in the film, "An Education" looked relaxed as she graced the red carpet.
"Well casting is very important, when you imagine the wrong people in the wrong films, it is not a nice thought," explained Lone Scherfig, who directed Mulligan in the film. "Carey, it is very much her film. I also want to say that Peter Sarsgaard is extremely important for the film."
Scherfig also weighed in on the race for best picture, where the Iraq war drama "The Hurt Locker" and the sci-fi 3D blockbuster "Avatar" have created real suspense as to who will take home the Oscar. This past week the stakes were raised when "Hurt Locker" producer Nicolas Chartier was denied attendance at the upcoming Oscar ceremony for sending an e-mail to Academy Award voters urging them to name his movie as best film.
"It is interesting. We have to remind ourselves that we are celebrating films," said Scherfig. "It is a bout winning and not about seeing other people lose. Basically, all the films and the event is a winner."
Filmmaker Michael Hoffman, who directed "The Last Station" doesn't believe the recent controversy should impact the voters.
"I don't know. It seemed to happen so late I am not quite certain what impact it would have. I also think its nonsense. Let's just evaluate the films for what they are. I think the "Hurt Locker is a marvelous. I love Katherine's work, the actor's work is extraordinary. So, I think we should just forget about it" said Hoffman.
