- Story Text: Sony unveiled a newfangled headset device on Wednesday (August 31) they hoped will do to 3D video what their Walkman in the 1980s did with music - make it more personal.
The headset, named HMZ-T1 has a mounted display that feeds separate HD video to a person's eyes in order to create the illusion of three dimensions.
Unlike traditional 3D glasses which use filters to alternate between two images displayed on a large screen, the HMZ-T1 has two tiny High definition Organic Light Emitting Diode(OLED) displays, one for each eye.
"We plan to sell the HMZ-T1 and offer a first in the world 3D big-screen experience that can be used on a personal and individual level," explained Sony's Consumer Products and Device second department manager Shigeru Kato.
While 3D has seen advancements in film and in television, most of the technology has been for geared towards group viewing.
Sony explained that the HMZ-T1, however, is designed to cater to a more private 3D experience.
"While the thinking up until now was to enjoy video together, this device and the manner we hope to develop it towards is more suited towards enjoying video by oneself," Kato said.
The headset connects using a standard cable to a Blu-ray player or Playstation 3 and includes surround sound audio earphones to complete the experience.
A one person full immersive experience doesn't come cheap however, with the headset expected to retail for 60,000 yen (approx. $785) when it finally goes on sale in Japan November 11. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
