- Story Text: A six-man team of experts from The People's Republic of China have been demonstrating crop cultivation techniques to peasants and commercial farmers at the Ashiamang Farm in Ghana. Although they are experts on various crops, they are concentrating on rice cultivation.
The team is on its way to supervise the development of a government irrigation project at Afife in the Volta region. A dam built there in 1965 at present irrigates about 250 acres for rice cultivation, but it is hoped that the project will eventually affect about 5,000 acres.
At the handing over ceremony in Accra on April 3rd, the leader of the Chinese team, Mr. Chen Ying-Jan, assured Colonel Frank Bernasco, Ghana's Commissioner for Industry, that the Chinese supported Ghana's policy of economic self-reliance. Twenty or thirty more specialists are expected soon. The Chinese have undertaken a large programme of technical aid in Africa in recent years.

The team is on is way to the Afife rice farm in the Volta region. A massive irrigation project costing about one million pounds is in progress there.
Mr. Chen Ying-Jan, the leader of the team, and Mr. Tang, the chief irrigation expert, and other members of the team have been working with both peasants and commercial farmers at Ashiamang. Mr. Ohemeng, the agricultural officer has been accompanying them. The dam at Afife, first put into use in 1970, affects a cultivated area of about 2,000 acres.
When they reach the Afife rice farm the team will be dealing with an irrigation project on a much greater scale. At the official hand-over in Accra on April 3rd, Colonel Frank Bernasco, Ghana's Commissioner for Agriculture, said the dam would irrigate an area of 5,000 acres. Opened in 1965, at present it affects only 250 acres.
This team represents another step forward in Chinese aid to Africa. The People's Republic has already contributed 169 million pounds sterling and technical personnel to the Tanzanian-Zambian railway. She is also involved in read-building in the Sudan and Tanzania. More experts are expected to arrive in Ghana soon.
