- Story Text: Video game console wars are heating up.
The next round in the video game console wars
kicked off in earnest Monday night (May 16) in Los Angeles
with Sony unveiling the Play Station 3 and Microsoft
showing off its XBox 360 game console.
Sony's PlayStation 3 will go on sale in spring of 2006,
with the company promising high-definition graphics and
broadband connectivity. The electronics and entertainment
conglomerate said the new game console will feature some of
the most powerful technology ever.
Having led the world-wide console gaming market for the
last 10 years with the PlayStation line, Sony is counting
on the new machine to dominate in all aspects of networked
home entertainment -- games, movies, music and more.
"Imagine watching an HD movie or a movie in a motion
picture theatre and imagine being able to play in that
theatre. From a gaming stand point, it's nothing short of
a quantum leap," says Kaz Hirai, President and CEO of Sony
Computer Entertainment.
Sony claimed the PS3 would have twice the processing
speed of the XBox 360, the new console from Microsoft that
will be released in November. Speed in games is often as
much a function of the way the games are written, however,
as it is the capacity of the hardware.
Microsoft's new XBox 360 sports high-definition
graphics and features that make it an entertainment hub for
the living room.
"XBox is an entertainment experience that revolves
around you and will take us all into the next generation.
In the next generation XBox will transform the way people
play games and have fun," said Robbie Bach, Senior Vice
President, Microsoft Games Division. Microsoft's XBox
business is arguably the Redmond, Washington company's
biggest bet, costing the software giant more than $1
billion in sunk costs every year since 2001.
Neither company has said how much the consoles will
cost.
Both Sony and Microsoft displayed their consoles at
press events held ahead of the start of E3, the annual
industry trade show in Los Angeles.
