- Story Text: Die hard gaming fans waited in line for hours in front
of stores in Paris and Berlin to be the first to own the Sony
PlayStation 2 console, following it's European launch.
Groups of gaming fans from hard-core gamers in their
20s and 30s to parents looking to buy for their children,
queued for hours on Thursday (November 23) for the chance to
own the Sony PlayStation2 that went on sale in Europe at
midnight.
In Paris, the Virgin Megastore located on the Champs
ELysees, decided to keep its doors open until one in the
morning to offer fans the chance to purchase the much-awaited
console as soon as it went on sale at one minute past
midnight.
Only 70,000 consoles will be initially supplied to
retailers in
France but Sony France accepted pre-orders between September
2 and October 7 and some 50,000 video games fans had already
paid the 3000 French francs to make sure they got the
much-awaited
console as soon as it is launched.
Meanwhile in Berlin, computer game fans waited outside
stores across the city to pick up a their consoles.
Andreas Hopp, a die hard gamer said that he waited for
ages so that he could purchase one before they sold out.
" At least I have one now. After hearing how sales went in
the States and Japan I am happy to own one to play new games
which are better," Hopp added.
According to its Japanese maker, Playstation 2 is equipped
with a 128 bit processor, a DVD player and three-dimensional
graphics, geared towards consumers from the age of eight
upwards.
Of the 500,000 copies thrown onto the European market Sony
hopes to sell almost 80,000 in Germany alone.
Sony Computer Entertainment Germany has succeeded in
convincing its followers that they need to act fast if they
want
to see a Playstation 2 under their Christmas trees this year.
According to the Japanese electronics giant, Germans have paid
deposits for some 40,000 Playstation 2 units which they had
reserved in advance.
