We have it playable on the show floor, we showed just a little taste and a preview today, we had people crying in the aisles. It is really a masterpiece, and I think more than anything, that's what differentiates Nintendo from our competition. We create stunning gaming masterpieces, that's what drives our hardware sales and that's what meets the needs of our fans." 2.23 (BN02) UNIDENTIFIED LOCATION (FILE) (NINTENDO VNR) 10. - Story Text: Nintendo unveils prototypes of new console and portable gaming
device.
Nintendo revealed a prototype on Tuesday (May 17, 2005) of its next
generation game console. Nintendo also showed off its new portable game
player, the Game Boy Micro.
The next generation game console code-named the 'Revolution', will be for
sale sometime in 2006 and will be about the size of 3 DVD cases put together.
The Revolution is key for Nintendo, as the company's most recent console,
the Game Cube has come in third place in the console wars behind Sony's Play
Station and Microsoft's XBox.
"In this next generation, development costs will commonly move well into 8
figures, developers will become more endangered," Nintendo president Saturo
Iwata told the crowd at the unveiling. "For them we offer a solution to help
maximize creative freedom while controlling development investments. This is a
console where the big idea can prevail over big budgets."
Nintendo also unveiled the new Game Boy Micro, a portable gaming device.
The new player, which will be out this Fall is also critical for Nintendo.
"What Game Boy Micro represents is a line extension for Game Boy Advance,"
said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo America's executive vice president of sales and
marketing. "It's a product for those who are a little bit more image conscious
and want something a little bit more stylish. It has removable face plates and
we believe it's just another way to bring new innovation into the marketplace
for Game Boy Advance."
Sony's Play Station Portable handheld gaming device has outsold Nintendo's
DS portable gaming device (in the United States) since the PSP came to market 2
months ago.
