- Story Text: INTRO: A new system is launched to allow computer users in Russia to communicate worldwide on the Internet.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Microsoft, a world leader in computer software production, on Thursday (March 14) launched a new system to allow computer users in Russia to communicate worldwide on the Internet.
The project was launched jointly with two Russian computer companies - Agama and ProMT.
According to Ilya Billig, spokesman for Microsoft in Moscow, from now on European users will also soon be able to extract Russian information from the Internet in their own languages.
During the past five years Russia has become more involved in the computer world with Russian PC users requiring new sophisticated technology for their businesses. To cater for the growing Russian demand, leading Western computer companies are increasing their involvement in the country's market.
The General Manager of Digital Equipment International, Bernard Schafer, said people in Russia had understood that computers were essential in developing the economy and financial system.
Computer technology is very popular among Russian youngsters whose favourite studies are now computer classes and computerised movies.
Not everyone can afford to buy the expensive registered software so the flourishing black market of illegal programmes satisfies the growing demand of average users.
Pirated versions of Microsoft's "Windows - 95" were on sale six months before the official launch in Russia. They were several times cheaper than the genuine product.
