- Story Text: Brazil fans are hoping for better luck when they host the 2014 World Cup after the tournament favourites are dumped out of the 2010 quarter-finals by the Netherlands.
Wesley Sneijder headed a second-half winner as Netherlands battled back from a goal down to beat ten-man Brazil 2-1 on Friday (July 2), and secure a place in the World Cup semi-finals.
Brazil, the five-times champions, took a tenth minute lead through Robinho and dominated the first-half against a Dutch team which initially looked outclassed.
But the Dutch levelled out of the blue in the 53rd minute after a rare mistake from Brazil's usually impenetrable defence, as Felipe Melo headed Sneijder's cross into his own goal.
Then Sneijder headed the winner as the Dutch, battling to their 13th successive World Cup win to maintain a perfect record in the qualifiers and finals, avenged a quarter-final defeat in 1994 and a semi-final defeat four years later.
After the match had finished, dejected Brazilian left the stadium as the Dutch orange army celebrated their first win over Brazil in the World Cup finals since 1974.
"Brazil 2014 -- Only in 2014 now, 2014," was all one fan could say, referring to Brazil hosting the 2014 tournament.
Another fan, Italo, said that the team played well in the first half but after the Dutch scored they did nothing, and he believed the coach Dunga should have changed tactics.
"Brazilian coach did not make the right changes. The team started well. We played well until the end of he first half. We came to the second half apathetic, without any life. I don't know what happened," he said.
Brazilian fan Mederan also was critical of Dunga.
"Brazil are favourites, but in this World Cup we knew it would not work well because he did not make the right choices. But for the next one we have many good players in Brazil who did not come to this World Cup -- so the next is ours. I still believe in Brazil because it is my country and we have the best football in the world," she said.
The Netherlands will play the winner of the later quarter-final on Friday when Ghana will carry the hopes of Africa against Uruguay. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
