- Story Text: Paraguay's hopes of advancing to the Round of 16 in the 2010 World Cup got a boost on Sunday (June 20) when they beat an uninspired Slovakia side in the Free State stadium in Mangaung, Free State.
"We are very happy. We came from Paraguay and made a lot of sacrifices and we are very happy, Paraguay is going on and up. Go Paraguay," said Lydia Roa.
Another fan, Pedro, said Paraguay were doing it for their hero, Salvador Cabanas - the 2007 South American footballer of the year who was gunned down in January, and is still on the long road to recovery.
"I'm very happy, very happy, because we win 2:0 and this victory is dedicated to our idols who could not come here: Salvador Cabanas, a great player who is sick, this victory is for him, 2:0. Go Paraguay," said Pedro.
Paraguay midfielder Enrique Vera scored in the 27th minute sending the teams into the break with Paraguay up 1-0.
The second half proved just as difficult for Slovakia when Christian Riveros scored the second goal in the 86th minute.
Slovakia's next opponents are the World Cup holders, Italy, leaving them a tough challenge to have any hope of getting through to the next round.
"It's very improbable, but at least if we happen to beat Italy that means we will not go home with eyes down," said Slovakia supporter, Vladimir Duranka.
Another Slovakia fan Erik Augustine said that the Slovak squad played badly.
"They were very, very slow in my opinion. They couldn't pass the ball, no shots, none at all, I think the first shot at goal was in the 92nd minute or so, so I'm very disappointed."
