- Story Text: Swiss fans celebrated as their team pulled off the first big upset of the 2010 World Cup with a 1-0 win over tournament favourites Spain in their opening Group H match
played in Durban on Wednesday (June 16).
A goal from Gelson Fernandes in the 52nd minute gave Switzerland their first ever victory over their opponents in 19 games.
Swiss fans coming out of the Durban Stadium were delighted with the unexpected result, which now gives their team a great chance of reaching the second round.
"It's unbelievable, it's unbelievable, they played it just right, it's unbelievable," said Swiss fan Mario Schendener as he left the stadium, a sentiment echoed by other supporters.
"It's huge, it's huge, it's fantastic, it's fantastic, it's great, it's great," said Stefan Gassler and Patrick Binkert as they celebrated.
There was disappointment amongst the Spanish fans.
"It is a disaster, a total disaster, mostly because it is the first match and it can give you motivation to play well in the second game and get through," said Enrique Coca.
"We are very disappointed. We came here only to see this World Cup match and it took away a bit of the taste from our mouths. Tomorrow we are going to Madrid and Spain lost. Let's hope next time it will be better," said another fan.
