- Story Text: South Africa's biggest brewery SAB says it will produce more beer than it usually does, to accommodate the soccer fans during the World Cup.
Visitors and fans will not run out of beer during the month-long tournament. A limited edition of the local brand lager in support of the World Cup and the local team Bafana Bafana has been produced.
The one million aluminium bottles are a first in packaging in the South African beer market. This collectors' edition is a limited pack and will be available in selected bottle stores and bars.
Hundreds of soccer fans that have started arriving in the country ahead of the kick-off on Friday (June 11), are already enjoying the local beer.
"This is a very good beer and I like it, I've never tried this kind of beer before, it's really wonderful," said Andro Chavez.
The Mexican tourist is in South Africa for a month and has all the tickets to Mexico's games, including the opening game against the hosts.
"I have tried this one, and I am going to be drinking this one" added Chavez.
The company, which produces roughly nine out of every ten bottles of beer drunk in South Africa, is predicting a 5 percent increase in sales during the tournament.
But it will be able to meet the extra demand, equivalent to 30 million bottles, because the southern hemisphere winter is normally its slowest sales period.
"So, we are very excited in South Africa and Castle Lager we are behind Bafana Bafana with ABSA, and we are very excited about this, we've got lots of guests coming to South Africa, and we believe South Africa is gonna get behind this World Cup, for us this represents a wonderful opportunity to sell more beer in June and July which are traditionally quite months for us being the winter and we are well prepared, we plan to sell a hundred thousand hectare litres more beer during this time, which is 13 million bottles of beer and obviously Castle Lager is our flagship brand and for incoming visitors this is a wonderful opportunity for them to try our flagship brand which is the beer of South Africa, Castle Lager," said Alastair Hewitt, the company's general manager.
Organisers are predicting 373,000 foreigners for the tournament, less than initial expectations of 450,000 due mainly to the impact of last year's global economic slowdown.
Budweiser, owned by SABMiller rival Anheuser-Busch InBev and an official FIFA partner, is the only authorised supplier inside stadiums. SAB will be allowed to sell their beer at 10 FIFA fan parks in the World Cup cities, but only in unmarked bottles to avoid breaching FIFA's rights rules. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
