- Story Text: South African president Jacob Zuma and the Democratic Republic of Congo's Joseph Kabila met on Friday (October 30) to consolidate bi-lateral relations between the two countries.
The meeting between the countries took place within the context of consolidation of the African Agenda.
Attended by a delegation of South African and Congolese ministers, the summit focused on the crucial continued support by South Africa of the DRC's post conflict reconstruction and development project.
"The conflict situation in the Eastern DRC has not made things any easier, we are certain that the efforts of the DRC government under your leadership, your excellency, and other parties supporting the peace process will eventually bring total stability and security in the area," Zuma said in his address, adding that South Africa will continue to lend support to the DRC.
"Despite the challenges imposed on all of us by the global economic meltdown, I wish to assure you your excellency of our continued support for the post conflict reconstruction and development process in the DRC."
This is the sixth summit of the SA-DRC Bi-national Commission, with the first one having been held in Kinshasa in 2004.
President Kabila re-iterated the DRC' support of South Africa's hosting of the 2010 World Cup, sighting the co-operation between his country's energy utility Snell and South Africa's Eskom.
"With regard to our co-operation and certain present day challenges, I am very happy that consultations are being carried out between Snell and Eskom on a project for procurement of about 150 Megawatts in the context of 2010 world cup. The organising of this historic world cup which South Africa is hosting is really a first time event for our continent and its success is a very important event and it requires a mobilisation from all the children of Africa, beginning with those who come from the member countries," Kabila said.
The two countries have resolved to meet on a more frequent basis with the summit taking place twice a year, and even quarterly at ministerial level. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
