- Story Text: Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete was on Robben Island on Wednesday (July 20) where he visited the cell that housed former South African president Nelson Mandela for over 25 years.
Kikwete is on his first state visit to South Africa since he took office in 2005.
Mandela was jailed at Robben Island from 1964-982 at the behest of South Africa's apartheid government.
The Tanzanian President was seen holding on to the bars in front of Mandela's former cell window where he paused for a moment.
The prison, now a museum, has become a much-visited tourist site, and many who visit Cape Town take the 30-minute boat trip to the island.
Kikwete also visited the Lime Quarry where the anti-apartheid struggle leader endured hard labour for the duration of his stay as a prisoner.
Kikwete arrived in South Africa on Tuesday and was met by South African president Jacob Zuma.
They discussed political issues affecting the continent, bilateral cooperation and economic ties. They also signed two new agreements on forming a bi-national commission to broaden the scope of the two countries' relations and on cooperation in arts and culture.
Tanzania is also exploring investment and trade opportunities between the two countries. More than 150 South African companies operate in Tanzania. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
