- Story Text: South African police on Thursday (January 20) removed the bodies of a French couple who were killed in a shootout with police earlier the same day.
South African police said they believed they had shot dead the fugitive French couple who spawned a massive manhunt after they allegedly killed a policeman.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Hendrick Swart told reporters the bodies had not been formally identified.
Police suspect Philippe Meniere, 60, and his wife Agnes Jardel, 55, of opening fire last Friday (January 14) on police trying to evict them for non-payment of rent from their farmhouse, killing one officer and injuring another.
Swartz said police found the couple barricaded at another farmhouse in the Sutherland area, northeast of Cape Town, and a shootout erupted on Thursday when they tried to take them into custody. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
