- Story Text: Chelsea star Florent Malouda was the first of the French national team to leave South Africa on Wednesday (June 23), after the French exited the World Cup.
France lost 2-1 to South Africa in Bloemfontein on Monday (June 23) and are now heading home in virtual disgrace.
The players had created a national scandal when they rebelled against coach Raymond Domenech, boycotting a training session after Domenech had sent home striker Nicolas Anelka after a reported argument. Captain Patrice Evra also did not appear for the last game after he failed to attend the South African pre-match press conference.
On the field, the highly paid stars performed equally abysmally. Hosts South Africa beat the troubled 2006 runners-up 2-1 in their final Group A match with Malouda scoring the consolation goal.
The 1998 champions can expect a storm of protest when they arrive home. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
