- Story Text: Ghana and Germany soccer fans travelled to Soccer City in Johannesburg, South Africa on Wednesday (June 23) for their teams' last World Cup Group D match with both sides needing at least a draw to progress to the second round of the World Cup final.
German fan Christian Kollmann said he hoped Germany could turn the tide of the big European teams giving disappointing performances.
"I really hope so, we weren't so good in the last match, but today it will be 3:0."
"We have to make an exception, otherwise it doesn't look good," Simon Zehmeier said. "Ghana will be a tough team to play, but we will do our best and really give it a go. They are young enough, they can run fast and they should give it their all."
Ghana currently lead the group on four points after beating Serbia and then drawing with Australia. Germany are one point behind after beating Australia but then suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Serbia in which German striker Miroslav Klose was sent off and team mate Lukas Podolski missed a penalty.
Ghana is the last chance of an African country having a try at keeping the World Cup in Africa, but the chances are slim.
"Realistically speaking no (the World Cup won't stay in Africa), but they are going to give their best, and hopefully speaking yes, they can do it," said one South African, Gloria Williams, who had come out to support her fellow Africans.
"My heart days Ghana but I think Germany is going to win," said another South African fan, Samantha, "I am hoping that at least one African country will go through, just one."
Ghana only need a draw to progress to the second round but Germany must win to ensure that they are not overtaken by Serbia if they were to beat Australia in the other Group D match being played simultaneously. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
